TaxonomyIn most classifications Equisetales contains one family, Equisetaceae. In the PPG1 classification Psilotaceae, Ophioglossaceae, Equisetaceae, Marratiaceae, Osmundaceae and Schizaeaceae are placed in their closely related separate orders.
Plant theoryIn the Plant theory Psilotaceae, Ophioglossaceae, Equisetaceae, Marratiaceae, Osmundaceae and Schizaeaceae are all included in the order Equisetales, in the subclass Equisetidae. This makes Equisetales not monophyletic according to DNA analyses.
The classification is tentative, as some families are not known well enough in homeopathy for an exact placement.
Equisetaceae are placed in Subphase 4. This shows the prominent quality of Silicon, being in Subphase 4 in the Silicon series, just as Equisetaceae is. Equisetum is the plant with the highest content of Silicon of all known plants, up to 80%.
