TaxonomyIn the PPG1 classification Equisetanae is not a monophyletic clade. Part of Equisetanae form together with the Polypodianae the Leptosporangiate Ferns.
Plant theoryIn the Plant theory Equisetanae is treated as a class in the Pteridophyta. It is not monophyletic. The name Equisetanae conforms to the ending “anae’ for classes in the Plant theory, instead of Equisetopsida.
Equisetanae is the third class, connected to the Silicon series.
Equisetanae is the most problematic part of the Plant theory classification of ferns, when looked at from the point of monophyly. In the PPG1 classification Equisetanae looks like a tree, with every new branch being a totally individual group. It is the problem of differentiating a sequence of evolution with a new generation of evolution. It is similar to a sequence of children who belong to one generation, compared with that of persons of another generation.
