Antheridia 1-2 in leaves axils of (3-)4-lobed leaves. Archegonia solitary and scattered (1-4/shoot). Sporophyte (only in Takakia ceratophylla, rarely encounte- red) Stomata on Sporophyte absent. Seta persistent. Capsule twisted, dehisce along single slit. Calyptra present. Asexual reproduction by deciduous leaves or shoots.
