Family
Impatiens balsamina A young woman aged 21, she is tall, slim, senses her surroundings by letting them come to her, is fairly closed off, and has bulging eyes. She tells her story at length, sitting upright with her eyes wide open, with remarkable efficiency and clarity, empathizing but not affected by what she is saying or by the questions asked.
The year before, she felt terrible and was under a lot of stress. She was studying, but it wasn't for her; she wanted to do something with her life. She was unhappy, and quitting took a huge weight off her shoulders. She wants to be ‘normal’, she says fighting her tears, have a job, just be an employee. She was in a relationship for two years but recently broke up with her boyfriend, felt not beloved. Her parents are divorced, which causes painful discord in the family. “I think I'm looking for a replacement for my father.” Her father has always kept his distance; she doesn't see her stepfather as a father figure, and there is still a lot of arguing at home. That's the mental part.
The complaints: a lot of abdominal pain and cramps. She used to have a lot of migraines, but this decreased after switching to a different pill and acupuncture; now it only happens the day before her period. A lot of abdominal cramps, it begins when she wakes up, and she has a lot of gas, which is worse when she eats salads and spinach. While eating (after just five minutes), she experiences pain in her left hypogastrium and passes very foul-smelling gas, with a distinct sulfur odor. This has been occurring for several years, but has worsened over the past two years. She is always nervous when going somewhere, such as to school or engaging in activities she has been doing for years, before she leaves. The tension causes stomach ache, palpitations, she feels her carotid arteries pulsing, and sweating.
She remains insecure about her appearance, she avoids mirrors, and she really doesn't want to see herself. She knows what she wants in life: a job, to be happy. That's the only thing she feels certain about. With everything else, she's afraid she's not good enough for, including other people, or for a relationship. Last year, she had a rash on her face, inflammation, which burned like fire. This disappeared after Rubus idaeus (but nothing else changed). With the study stress, she was hypersensitive to sound and light. Loud noises make her very nervous. She can't stand too much sun, and too much makeup makes her eyes water. She also has hay fever, which is ‘annoying’. As child she had it very badly, worse in the spring, with a lot of itching in her mouth, palate, and ear. Contact with animals causes a rash on her jaw line. She has no friends; she did not feel loved in her relationship. Friends: it feels often as an obligation, then she does not want it.
Dreams: often about people she saw a long time ago. That her boyfriend walked away. Philosophizing is fun, but she likes to ‘roll up her sleeves and get to work’. When she sees knives or a cutting machine, thoughts run through her mind: ‘what would happen if…’. Even when she sees a train coming: “What would happen if...”. As a child, she could do strange things, like sit in a cupboard or hang from the bed for as long as she could. These were compulsive actions: 'I have to think about it, I have to hurt myself. Headaches: when they're very bad on the sides, a release of tension. She always carries on as normal with a headache. At home, the bomb often explodes, and there are arguments; but you can't see that in her. She always want to have a plan B.
AnalysisSeries 64: Silver series fits her appearance, presentation, but her sensitivity and problems are more focused on her appearance, ‘can I be functional’ and not so much on the concept of ‘beauty’, so more fitting for Series 4, and having control over it is Series 6, as are obsession or fixation (with the rash she hid behind a scarf). Iron series: practical, she ‘just’ wants a job, she wants to ‘just be’, participate in social life.
Series 64 brings us to the Ericidae, according her own vision, overview and insight into herself, independent thinking and living: Series 6, work, society: Series 4.
Phase 1: not feeling at home, not belonging anywhere, outsider, wanting to be worth something (concept of Iron series), but not knowing what and how.
This prescription was before the 2013 publication; the Balsaminales had not yet been divided into Subphases. The placement on Subphase 5 fits in with the woman's ‘explosive’ home situation. Also, the restlessness, wanting more, wanting to go further.
Stage 6 fits with hiding, shame.
Prescription: Impatiens balsamina MK.
Follow-upAfter two days, she already has less stomach pain and no more terrible gas.
Before, she had pain with everything she ate or drank; now, she only has slight pain after salads and vegetables; she eats these and no longer has constant pain. From now on her bowel movements are very good. She feels more confident, doesn't need to wear as much makeup, for example, and when she looks in the mirror now, she thinks: It's not so bad. She used to be afraid of getting fat (Phase 5 aspect), but that is less now. She quickly thought of herself as a monster. For a long time, she felt like a good-for-nothing (Iron series aspect) when she dropped out of school, wondering, “What am I supposed to do with myself, with my life?” She was always very diligent at school, and she enjoyed it until she reached puberty: school was “no fun,” so she stopped studying. She doesn't have many friends; she can't handle it, it's suffocating. She has a hard time with crowds; in a large group of people, she starts to hyperventilate (Phase 5 aspect).
Since her first period, she has had a lot of pain during the first two days, cramps, her entire lower body hurts, front and back, and a bruised pain. Since taking the pill, her periods have become regular, but with just as many complaints. Smells: preference for lily of the valley, aversion to jasmine.
She still recounts everything rationally, with keen observation, almost like an analysis. “I don't say anything, because it always comes across wrong,” which increases the distance between her and her sister. After a year, things are going very well; she still feels calmer, and she works among tough men (Stage 06?). She no longer has any tension. She still has menstrual complaints, but to a lesser extent. Because things are going well otherwise, repetition of the remedy will not add much, so she is given Convalaria majalis: after this, her menstruation is problem-free (choice: theme of sister, two vulnerable girls, parents' relationship with deception, unrest in pelvis and head as duality of the Liliales).
