Family
English: Soft bracken; False bracken; Common ground fern; Rainbow fern.
Name: from the Greek kalos meaning beautiful, and chlaina meaning cloak; dubia is the Latin for dubious.
Clades: Dicksoniaceae.
Genus: 5 species.
Region: Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania.
Habitat: understory; in open forests , rainforests; prfers clay soils.
Use: ornamental, garden.
BotanyFern; tree fern, small; very common; ground ferns; resembling bracken; forming large banks or swathes; 40 to 150 cm tall.
Root: thick brown haired rhizomes.
Leaves: triangular overall; tripinnate-pinnatifid; yellow green; stipe dark brown, reddish- to yellow brown,covered with soft brown hairs.
Sori: near the margin.
TaxonomyCalochlaena dubia was first named Davallia dubia. It was known for many years as Culcita dubia. It gained its current name with the new genus Calochlaena described in 1988.
