TaxonomyI the Ppg1 classification Schizeaceae, Anemiaceae and Lygodiaceae are placed in a monophyletic order Schizaeales. They are placed in the evolving tree of the Leptosporangiate ferns.
Plant theoryAnemiaceae is a family with only one genus, but many species. In the Plant theory Anemicaeae is split off from Schizaeaceae. Anemicaeae is also placed in Subphase 7, but in Cyatheales instead of Equisetales.
BotanyFern; very fern-like; terrestrial or epipetric.
Leaves: dimorphic, fertile and sterile fronds; lack well-defined sori; in fertile fronds, the two lowermost pinnae are highly modified to bear the sporangia.
Sporangia: with a horizontal annulus that lies below and completely encircles the top of the sporangium.
Chromosome numbers: x=38, n=38, 76, 114.
