Essence: Restlessly helping
Restless in their desire to help
They feel that they have to be perfect and help everybody. If they don’t, things could suddenly go wrong and that would be the end of everything. This is based on a fear that they might suddenly find themselves completely on their own, and it makes them very restless. The have to do well, first of all to avoid mistakes, and secondly to try and create a link with as many people as possible. They run around doing many things at once and don’t give themselves a moment’s rest. Their speech and their behaviour is impatient and hurried.
Obsessive in their desire to help
There is something obsessive about the sort of help they offer. They feel they have to be there for everybody, family, friends, even complete strangers. As if they can’t refuse without risking being left stranded on their own in the big wide world. It is as if their existence depends on their willingness to work and to help.
Helping without ideas or ideals
They feel they should let go of all ideals and just help for the sake of it. As long as they are willing to help everything will be fine. It becomes a sort of escape: ‘you will be saved if you help, regardless of your ideals or motivation’.
Another possibility is that they make helpfulness into an ideal, a rule of life: you always have to be ready to help all human beings and animals.
Helpfulness with humour
They can’t really tolerate criticism very well. Even mild teasing from other people can upset them greatly. They regard it as an attack designed to undermine their position.
Or they may be the ones who tease others, or who view their own job and all their ambitions with a certain degree of humour. They are afraid of being swallowed up by their ideals and try to keep it all into perspective by a subtle joke.
Emigration after failure
Eventually their exaggerated urge to help may lead to a nervous breakdown. They regard this as a failure and will no longer feel at ease in their former job. It is as if they are condemned and it makes them want to move far away or emigrate.
