Botany: 1 genus, Fouquieria; 11 species; desert; semi-succulent stems with thinner spikes, developing from a woody thickening on the outer (lower) side of the leaf petiole; leaves on the bases spikes; northern Mexico, south US.
Fouquieria splendens: Jomjéeziz; Xomjéeziz.
Fouquieria diguetii: Baja California tree ocotillo; Jomjéeziz caacöl.
Fouquieria columnaris: Boojum; Cototaj.
Fouquieria has been placed in the Violales or their own order Fouquieriales. There is no close resemblance to any other plants; genetic evidence shows their place in Ericales.
