Habitat: montane evergreen forests; 800--1500 m.
BotanyShrubs or small trees, 3–6 m tall.
Stem: young branches.
Leaves: petioles with sessile, peltate scales, glabrescent, 10–15 mm, persistently densely lepidote; blade oblong or ovate-oblong, occasionally oblong-lanceolate, ± 8 cm long, 3 cm wide, discolorous, both surfaces glabrescent, adaxially shiny, base cuneate or subobtuse, margin entire, apex acute or acuminate; lateral veins 6 or 7 on each side, abaxially prominent; reticulate veination obscure on both surfaces.
Flowers: bracts oblong; male flowers borne in lower part, sessile, stamens 4 to 5, filaments 4 to 9 mm, anthers ± 2 mm; bisexual flowers shortly pedicellate, floral cup 2 to 3 mm; stamens 4 to 11, ovary villous, styles 4 to 5 mm, glabrous, recurved; blooning April to June.
Fruit: capsules 1 to 4, pedicellate, ± 12 mm, gray-brown villous, apex subacute, persistent floral cup ± 4 mm, with dense sessile scales; persistent styles short.
Seeds 4–5 mm.
