Case by Jan Scholten.
Boy, 7 years old, autism. The autism started when he was one and a half years old. He became very active, agitated and didn't react to his name anymore. He became naughty and was running away from his parents. His speech and understanding regressed. He could be hysterical, having tantrums when he had to do something he didn't want. He became impatient and annoyed when he had to wait somewhere.
He also had many infections, bronchitis with a lot of mucus and diarrhoea with greenish stools.
His pregnancy went very well, but it was a bit difficult for the mother to become pregnant. The labour was very quick, the first phase was in four hours and the second phase in five minutes. As a baby he was bluish for while, but very calm. Breastfeeding went very well. He mostly didn't have any special or severe reactions to vaccinations. But once, at one and a half, he was crying on the way home after vaccination. After that his father started noticing that he was regressing, that he got closed, as if in a bubble.
Mind
He has a very little contact with other children. He likes to be surrounded by them, but does not respond to them. He does not know how to react and interact. His speech consists of single words or short commands like "give me" or "come on". He often points with his finger to things he wants. His communication is simple, about food, home and toilet. He likes cuddling very much, with his mother and father.
He likes trains and cars very much. He is building bridges for trains. He's playing in his own world. He only goes to his parents when he needs something. He is joyful, smiling, charming, cute and sweet. Others easily assume that he is normal.
He is hyperactive, all over the place and his concentration is low. He is never aggressive to anyone else, but he can hit himself on his head when he has tantrums. The tantrums are not very frequent, but then he's hysterical, running around and doing what he wants. He can play with his genitals. He is hypersensitive to noise, especially of running water and vacuum cleaners. Then he covers his ears. He likes closing doors. He is a bit sneaky and cheeky, playing the joker, like jumping unexpectedly on his grandmother. He is more obedient when others are strict with him.
He doesn't talk to his neighbours.
He doesn't like to write and draw and refuses to take on a pen.
FamilyHe is very connected to his mother. They are very nice together and he needs many cuddles from her. He has very good contact with his father and can be very happy when he comes home. His father can be strict, which gives him balance. His older sister engages with him, and he starts to listen to her.
In World War II his grandfather had to rebuild their house and farm when he was young, after they had been burned down. His grandfather disappeared in the war. There are stories in the family of children being given away at an early age. There are also stories of children being used as cheap workers at farms. Life could be hard, without compassion, with much jealousy and frustration.
