English: Clubmosses, Firmosses, Spikemosses, Quillworts; Lycophytes.
Synonym: Lycopodiopsida; Lycopodiophyta; Lycophyta.
Clades: Pteridophyta; Plants.
Members: Salviniidae, Lycopodiidae.
Taxonomy
Lycopodianae are part of the Tracheophyta, the vascular plants. The other group are the Euphyllophytes: Ferns, Gymnospermae and Angiospermae, the flowering plants. The position in classifications, such as the the PPG1 classification is a bit strange. On the one hand they are not treated as ferns, on the other hand they are included in the Pteridophyta.
Plant theory
In the Plant theory Lycopodianae is placed as a class in the Carbon series of the Ferns, Pteridophyta. Lycopodianae has 2 Subclasses.
To conform to the naming system of the Plant theory as a class the name Lycopodianae would fit better.
Botany
Fern.
Root: dichotomous.
Leaves: microphylls, with a single vascular trace or vein.
Reproduction: by spores; alternate generations; homosporous, or heterosporous.
Sori: lacking.
Sporangia: lateral; often kidney-shaped or reniform; exarch protosteles, in which the protoxylem is outside the metaxylem rather than vice versa; dorsiventral and transversely dehiscent; 1 per leaf, adaxial.
Introduction
