IntroductionWoodsiaceae: Cliff ferns.
Clades: Aspleniales; Aspleniineae; Polypodianae; Pteridophyta; Plants.
Genera: Matteuccia, Onoclea, Onocleopsis, Pentarhizidium.
Region: north temperate.
Culture: Woodsia gave rise to pteridomania, obsessive fern collecting
Use: ornamental, for their delicate, feathery leaves, in shaded gardens.
Plant theoryOnocleaceae is treated as a family in the order Aspleniales. It is placed in subphase 2. Woodsiaceae is included in Onocleaceae.
TaxonomyIn the Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group classification of 2016 Onocleaceae is closely allied to Blechnaceae and Athyriaceae, sometimes placed in their order Blechnales.
Matteuccia struthiopteris was previously classified under the Dryopteridaceae.
Woodsiaceae included the members of the families Athyriaceae and Diplaziopsida-ceae.
BotanyFern; terrestrial.
Rhizomes: long- to short-creeping to ascending, and sometimes stoloniferous (Matteuccia and Onocleopsis).
Leaves: pinnatifid or pinnate-pinnatifid; strongly dimorphic, fertile fronds different from the sterile fronds; petioles have two vascular bundles uniting distally into a gutter-shape; veins are free or anastomosing, lacking included veinlets.
Spores: reniform; brownish to green.
Sori: enclosed by reflexed laminar margins; with membranous, often fugacious, true indusia.
Woodsiaceae are lithophytic ferns, living on limestone rock, in crevices, in temperate and alpine and circumpolar regions, like America, Europe, Asia.
