Botany: 20 genera; 500 species; herbs, shrubs; cosmopolitan; semi-arid; Africa, Australia, South America; 2 sepals; 4-6 petals; succulent, fleshy leaves.
TaxonomyIn the Apg3 system Portulacaceae is a Family in the Order Cryophyllales. Sseveral genera were moved to Montiaceae, Didiereaceae, Anacampserotaceae and Talinaceae, thus making the family.
In the Plant theory Portulacaceae is a family in the Order Portulacales, which is placed in the Subclass Caryophyllidae. Portulacaceae is placed in Subphase 6.
