He avoids the arguments, the insults and the misunderstandings with his wife. He has to put the arguments aside, as it does not do him any good. Basically, he thinks it was a bad decision to go along with it. His first marriage, 20 years ago, ended badly. His first wife left him and he got panic attacks. He was in therapy for a long time after that. His present wife cheated on him some years ago. He felt incredibly betrayed and violated. He no longer feels any desire for her. For him it is a now a practical, rational relationship. But he does not want to separate at his age, as there would be no change of finding something better now. He still has sex with his wife because she likes it but it is not pleasant for him any more. After the drama with his first wife, he did not want to get hurt again. He wanted a relationship where he is the boss, so he would not get hurt again. And then his wife cheated on him, again.
