Secret Lanthanides
Road to Independence

Introduction
Every time I discover a new remedy I’m fascinated by it. And soon I wonder how I ever could have done without it before. Because every remedy has its own state, its problem and atmosphere. It cannot be replaced by another. It’s always a delight to see a disease vanishing, going to where it came from, into nothingness. The delight and fascination are even greater when the discovery is a whole group of homeopathic remedies that opens a whole new field of homeopathic cures. The Lanthanides in particular open important fields. One of the most prominent groups of diseases is that of auto-immune diseases. These diseases reflect wonderfully well the mental theme, the theme of becoming autonomous. It is the theme of deciding what of your mental make up is your own and what comes from parents, upbringing and culture.
New and indispensable
The Lanthanides have been unknown until now in homeopathy. The pictures had to be ascertained from scratch. An advantage of the study of the Lanthanides was that I wasn't hindered by previous knowledge. They've become indispensable in my practice in a short time. They have their own and unique picture and thus curative power. Hahnemann was very aware of this and expressed it in § 119 of his Organon: "Every mineral and salt differs from all others, in its external as well as its internal, physical and chemical properties (which alone should have sufficed to prevent any confounding of one with another). As certainly do they all differ and diverge among themselves in their pathogenetic, consequently also in their therapeutic, effects, so that among them there can be, from a medical point of view, no equivalent remedies whatever, no surrogates." One can conclude from this paragraph that Hahnemann would have been delighted to have the Lanthanides at his disposal. Unfortunately, he had to use surrogates!
A good example of the specificity of homeopathic remedies is the Cerium phosphoricum case: 9 months of Praseodymium phosphoricum gave only palliation and Cerium phosphoricum cured.
Development
The Lanthanides have been developed now for four years. The first year, I only had incidental prescriptions like the Dysprosium case. In that period, the prescriptions were often found in a curious way, depending on luck and inspiration. The second year the themes became clearer. During the Lanthanides seminar in June 2001 I could show a glimpse of the possibilities. Only a few of those attending could work with it. The real break came when Robert Müntz of Remedia in Austria potentized the salts of the Lanthanides. The last two years I have made many successful prescriptions with the Lanthanides. The “Lanthanides” seminar in May 2003 opened the field for those attending. The prescriptions became very clear and precise. Many participants are working with them successfully already and are having wonderful results.
My hope is that this book will open the field of the Lanthanides for you, so that cures in the field of auto-immune disease, migraines and eye complaints will become possible.
The pictures have grown in the last four years. They have become more full, coherent, and meaningful. Once the state is understood and felt, the remedy becomes easy to prescribe. A few hints from the symptoms and the feeling of the remedy are enough. The rest of the interview will be done for confirmation. I’ve tried to describe also the state, the feeling of the remedy. I hope that I have succeeded in describing it well enough to be recognized by the reader.
I wish you well with this knowledge.
In progress
The information in this book is neither complete, nor finished. The study of the Lanthanides is work in progress. But the level of the knowledge is such that I think others can understand and appreciate it and work with it successfully in practice.
Set up of the book
Part 1: Introduction
The introductory part gives explanations about this book. There's a short chapter about the "Element Theory". The Chapter "Remedies" explains how the remedy pictures were developed and described. The Chapters "Cases" explains how the cases are noted down. "Case scores" explains the scoring of the cases, "Case taking" gives notes about the special character of case taking, with further details in "Symbolic language" and "7 Levels". The theory behind classifications is explained in "Homeopathy and Science" and "Homeopathy and Classifications".
Part 2: Lanthanides in general
In part 2 the general themes of the Lanthanides are put forward: the picture, Autonomy, Shadow, Power, Mythology, Heracles, Odysseus and Clinical diseases.
Part 3: Lanthanides special
In part 3 the different Lanthanides and their salts are presented.
Part 4: Provings
In part 4 the provings are described. There's also an introduction to them and a theoretical discussion.
Part 5: Tables and data
In this part all the extra information is placed: tables, periodic systems, Stages, pictures, literature.
Foreword by Rajan Sankaran
It is indeed a pleasure and honour to write this foreword to Jan Scholten’s latest work, “The Secret Lanthanides”. Jan has done some pioneering and path breaking work on the Periodic Table and his earlier books, “Minerals” and “Elements” are very popular with the profession. In these books he gave us a logical way of mapping the Periodic table a structure that is simple yet brilliant. He developed the themes of various elements. Many unknown elements have been brought into use after these works, and we are very grateful.
Jan’s ever inquiring mind now explores the Lanthanides. He has been working on it and lecturing on it for some time and it is about time that it should be available in print.
It was my privilege to speak jointly with Jan in a seminar in Mumbai in January 2002, where he spoke about the Lanthanides.
What I understood from what he said in the seminar is that the Lanthanides feel they have to do things alone. Thus they can feel isolated. The elements themselves are hidden, though present commonly in nature, e.g. hidden in stones. Scientists took a long time to split them as they were tightly bonded. These elements have a secret quality. They also have a special quality to serve humanity, do things of benefit to society. Can conquer self, have to conquer, are their basic instincts. They believe in autonomy, they decide for themselves. They have to have control within themselves. They identify with all birds in general but especially birds of prey, which are leaders. Lanthanides have deep action on the eyes. They can change the spectacle number. People belonging to this series are sensitive to computers, mobile phones, to electromagnetic fields. They have two sides, duality is marked. They get irritated when there is no harmony, e.g. in a traffic jam, they can’t understand why people overtake or use the hard sshoulder. They are men who make peace, but do not want to be president.
He also spoke about the individual characteristics of each element of the series. Like Promethium, wants to learn more, expand their power, wants to work with cooperation. Help, learning, training, feedback and expansion are important. Samarium, takes on too much, only hard work, no free time, always in a hurry. Europium feels he is the clever one, finding all the solutions but not getting acknowledged. Have to fight to get the recognition. Gadolinium is at the centre and therefore, has to do with balance. Terbium feels he has to maintain his power. Has to perform, to show all the time and not allow the weak spot to show. He has fear of falling short. Dysprosium has to protect his power against attack, has to conserve, repeat or will be attacked. Mercury, which is below it, feels attacked by surroundings. Holmium has to retreat, can’t keep their whole power, has to retreat with the feeling “I know better”. Erbium has formal power only, therefore irresponsible e.g., the royal family of England. It stores emotions and breaks contact with others. The feeling is of not being able to do anything about it. Thulium feels terrible, it’s their last chance to maintain their ego. They feel they have to let go, lose their power. Body resistance is totally lost, as it is in Stage 15. It could be good for AIDS. Ytterbium fantasise about their lost power, imagined or real. There is danger in being too playful, because terrible things can happen e.g. playing with fire. Lutetium have out of proportion autonomy. No real responsibility.
Jan very beautifully correlated the Lanthanides in their respective Stages from 4 to 14 with the story of Hercules and the twelve labours laid down by Hera. He logically traces the ascent and descent in this series as he does with other series.
I am sure that like his earlier works, this one too will be very useful to the profession. The smile on the face of a successfully treated case is the main reward for such work.
Foreword by Louis Klein
The introduction of so many new Lanthanide minerals into homeopathic use is thanks to Jan Scholten’s untiring and brilliant pioneering spirit and work. His Lanthanide efforts, previously revealed through lectures and seminars, are now more effectively collated into the form of this wonderful book.
However, this book will not be received without some controversy based on the current conflict in the homeopathic profession. This echoes the late 19th and early 20th century controversy in modern chemistry related to the Lanthanides’ discovery and introduction into the periodic table.
In homeopathy, this ongoing conflict has to do with various individuals and groups attempting to define “Hahnemannian Homeopathy,” and dogmatically interpreting Hahnemann’s actions and writings. Hahnemann primarily introduced, for homeopathic use, mineral remedies that were known prior to his time period even though it was a time of rapid change in chemistry. The primary reason for choosing these minerals was that they were ones used as crude medicines. These ancient minerals shaped the classical homeopathic Materia Medica.
Hahnemann had significant challenges caused simply by his introduction of this small group of minerals to the newly emerging homeopathic science. By utilizing substances already known to have some medicinal affect, he hoped to make them more acceptable to the medical profession of the time. In our current time, this has been interpreted by some homeopaths as Hahnemann making a statement that these ancient mineral remedies are the only ones needed for homeopathic use. This attitude is simply incongruent with Hahnemann’s spirit of inquiry and revolutionary practice. In his lifetime, he was intrigued by, and contributed to, the great leaps that were being made in the field of chemistry.
Chemists also found the discovery of the crude Lanthanides as controversial. For many of the pioneers attempting to fill in the gaps of the periodic table, it was a challenging job as many of the lanthanides were hidden in other substances and difficult to obtain or isolate. The name Lanthanide, means hidden, which as Jan points out, is a key to their homeopathic use. Their eventual discovery caused skepticism in those who were clinging to a closed group of mineral substances, and who were overwhelmed by the swift expansion of the periodic table.
With the current scientific knowledge of the periodic table, Jan Scholten has poised homeopathy to take a leading role in fully using all the minerals on the periodic table as medicinal substances in a suitable energetic or potentized form. This provides us with an amazing amount of new minerals and salts.
Just as importantly, Jan Scholten’s discovery and revelation of a pattern or matrix within the periodic table offers us a broader therapeutic model for application. This model is a break-through in the organization of the periodic table into Stages and Series. In this book, he continues his new model and even expands on it. He also reveals more aspects of previously described remedies and salts besides just the Lanthanides; I found this particularly useful.
Many busy practitioners have had successful cures using these new concepts and substances to the point where, as in my own practice, it is now simply an integral part of what we do and how we approach a case. Jan Scholten’s discovery of the Lanthanides as homeopathic remedies has given us even more tools to cure profound pathology. After hearing his initial lectures on the Lanthanides and, subsequently prescribing some of them, I am delighted by the curative results. Now my patients, students and I can only thank Jan Scholten for having the courage to introduce this important body of work in the form of a comprehensive book.
Foreword by Mieke van Peursem
What does homeopathy do within a human being?
With the right remedy homeopathy, just like spirituality, gives me another view on reality of people and events. You see and experience something that cannot be perceived with the naked eye and normal observations: reality and your true self.
Life becomes more interesting, your spirit freer and wiser.
You feel yourself more at home in this world and see life from another perspective.
By a mysterious force your fears disappear, even when you have to face death. The quality of life becomes better. You become happier because you know which side to look to.
The veil of your soul is lifted, you come into harmony with yourself.
Your religious consciousness changes: the soul commands the body. That means an acceptance of the state you're in and being open to new possibilities.
Summarized: homeopathy places your life in a greater, more meaningful connection and teaches you, if necessary, to make other, less obvious choices "free as a bird in the sky". It helps you to discover your inner space and to face the challenge of standing up and going your own way.
This and a lot more means homeopathy to me.
Dedication
I dedicate this book to the Great Inspirator
Word of thanks
The first thanks go to my patients. They are the core of this book, provided their cases and gave permission for the publication. They gave me the living insight into the states of the Lanthanides.
I cannot thank too much Robert Müntz who prepared the Lanthanides and their salts (www.remedia.at). He had confidence in my project of the Lanthanides and could see its significance. Without his help this book wouldn’t have been what it is here and now. Thanks to him more salts are available from the Lanthanides than of the Gold series, Silver series and even Iron series. Without him this book wouldn’t have half of the information that it has now. He also provided the images of the Lanthanides on the end papers.
I thank my wife Maria Davits for all the love and support she gave while writing this book and for all our years together. I also thank her for allowing me to use her beautiful painting as cover design. The painting presents the atmosphere of the book very well. The color preference of most of the Lanthanides is also blue or violet.
I want to thank my parents and my family for all the support they’ve given me in my life, and especially my sister Toos and my brother Frank for their moral support.
I thank Rajan Sankaran, Louis Klein and Mieke van Peursem for writing their foreword.
Many thanks go to my colleagues at the Homeopatisch Artsencentrum Utrecht for their support, reviewing the text and testing my ideas in practice: Maria Davits, Annemiek Klitsie, Maria Klompé, Anton Kramer, Alex Leupen, Sonja Obbink, Gerard Wiringa and Willem Woutman.
For proof reading the text I want to thank Roger Savage and John Summerville, Louis Klein, Anton Kramer, Pieter Kuiper, Rob Peters, Mary van der Steur, Ulrich Welte, Anne Wirtz and Maarten Wouters.
I like to thank many homeopaths for their support and much valued ideas: Corine Bode, Kees Dam, Arnold Deckers, Leo van Gelder, Lou Klein, Anton Kramer, Pieter Kuiper, Frans Kusse, Frans Maan, Marguerite Pelt, Rob Peters, Margriet Plouvier, Enna Stallings, Riek Taekema, Ulrich Welte, Anne Wirtz and Maarten Wouters.
For providing cases I give many thanks to Bada Domic, Maria Klompé, Anton Kramer, Sonja Obbink, Marguerite Pelt, Herbert Sigwart, Ulrich Welte and Willem Woutman.
I want to thank Kees Dam, Vera Kopsky and Huib Wijtenburg for their contribution of the proving of Erbium. I also want to thank the homeopaths participating in the meditation provings.
Thanks go to Peter Huurdeman for the cover design.
Silent thanks go to all the musicians who have inspired me: Ali Farka Toure, Ry Cooder, Enya, Kitaro, Bach, Ravel, Simba Wanyika, Yousou N’dour, Ravi Shankar, Keith Jarret and Jimi Hendrix. Important for this book was the music of Pink Floyd. Their album “The Wall” has a special connection to the Lanthanides and Erbium in particular.
Special thanks go to nature, the elements and especially water. Baths have induced a lot of inspiration.
