Dutch Bonekruid, bean herb.
Region: S.E. Europe to West Asia.
Habitat: dry gravelly and stony slopes; to 1500 metres; fully hardy; well drained, moist, light sandy, medium loamy soil; full sun; tolerant of very alkaline soils; tolerates drought.
Content: about 0.5% essential oil, with a sharp and bitter flavour.
Uses: leaves, raw or cooked, for aromatic, slightly peppery flavours for cooked foods, especially beans, peas, meat, sausages, egg dishes, processed vegetables, salads, soups, gravies, pickles, baked products; condiment; tea; leaves, fresh or dried, as garnish for salads; tangy, marjoram-like flavour; scalp lotions for incipient baldness; oil to flavour processed foods, liqueurs, perfumes.
BotanyHerb; annual; to 0.3 m tall.
Flowers: hermaphrodite, self-fertile; flowering from July to August
Pollination: by insects.
