Habitat: coastline, growing in cracks on coastal bluffs, in oceanside forests, beach dunes, and similar habitat; affected by heavy fogs and sea spray.
BotanyRoot: anchors with a waxy, scaly rhizome.
Leaves: triangular or oblong; up to 85 centimeters long, 8 cm wide; many round-tipped linear or oblong segments, usually stiff and leathery, edged with shallow, rounded teeth.
Sori: on the underside of each leaf segment, crowded, rounded, half a centimeter wide.
