TaxonomyIn the PPG1 classifcation Marsileaceae were included in the order Salviniales.
Formerly Marsilea was included in the Hydropteridales (Rothwell and Stockey, 1994) or Salviniales (A. Smith et al., 2006).
Plant theoryMarsileales is the only member of the Subclass Marsileidae and class Polypodianae. It has only one member Marsileaceae, placed in Phase 1. This is the common situation in the Hydrogen series.
Salviniales is split in Salviniaceae, Azollaceae, and Marsileaceae, in their own order and subclass, which are placed respectively in the classes Lycopodianae, Equisetanae, and Polypodianae.
