Region: tropical and subtropical; Asia, Australia, Pacific Islands; India, Sri Lanka, Southeast Asia, northern Australia; Africa and Asia; introduced to North and South America.
Habitat: moist, shaded environments, such as forests, woodlands, along stream banks; prefers well-drained soil and can be found in both regions.
Content: flavonoids: protoapigenin, apigenin, kaempferol, quercetin.
BotanyLeaves: pinnate; leaflets arranged on both sides of a central stalk; lance-shaped; serrated or toothed margins; medium-sized.
Sori: round; covered by indusia; on the undersides of the leaflets.
TaxonomyMolecular data shows an affinity between a group of species which are sometimes classified in Macrothelypteris, Phegopteris, and allied genera.
