Ecology: the leave basket acts as a habitat and food storage for animals.

Stem: rhizomes, creeping, horizontal, covered with brown scales.
Leaves: pinnate; leathery, glossy; dark green; generally medium-sized, up to 1.22 metres long; 2 types; type 1 near the base of the plant are shorter, sterile, rust-colored, basket-like trapping moisture and organics.
Sori: usually linear, arranged along the veins on the undersides of the leaflets.
