Essence: being a diplomat and having to be a good mother.
Diplomat and having to be a good mother
They like to combine a good career with being a mother. But both tasks are very demanding and it is really a bit too much. So they tend to push some of the responsibilities on to other people. They try to share their work or the upbringing of the children with someone else. And they like to make some formal agreements to make sure that this sharing is arranged properly.
Made redundant because of being a mother
They may not be able to put so much attention to their managerial job anymore because they want to spend more time with the children. But that means that the work may pile up on their desk and somebody has to do it. When they hand some of their tasks over to others, these people will be inclined to take over all together. And so she gets pushed aside and made to feel superfluous. She is made redundant. Another possibility is that they'll spend less time at home and try to hand some of the care of the children over to family, friends or nannies. But when these people take on the responsibility the mother feels pushed aside, as if she has got no say in the upbringing of her own children anymore.
A mother who is blasé
They have often had a mother who was quite formal, so that they never knew what their mother really felt or thought. The mother is not really interested in her children because she is too preoccupied with her task as manager. The children feel as if the mother is wearing a mask, as if only the outside matters to her. She attaches great importance to her childrens education so that they will do well in life, she will probably try and force them into a good career, especially if she didn’t succeed in that line of work herself.
Criticism leads to self pity
They are not very good at dealing with criticism, particularly if it concerns their job or their children. They feel insulted that people are having doubts about her sense of responsibility. They try to avoid any future criticism by introducing all sorts of formal rules into their life. But this makes them feel uneasy to, because it feels as if their life is not their own anymore, as if they have handed over all responsibility. They will start to complain about so much injustice.
Failure in diplomacy leads to anti social behaviour
Eventually things will go wrong, because they don’t take responsibility for their life anymore. They neglect their friendships and can no longer make contact with other people. Then they complain that nobody wants to see them anymore. They don’t understand these people and withdraw, feeling sorry for themselves but not showing it. They always keep a straight face, right to the very end. But deep inside they feel depressed and may even contemplate suicide.
