Habitat: acidic, nutrient-poor soils; open, exposed ridges or in montane forests; high humidity and rainfall; forest understorey.
Ecology: stabilizing soil; providing habitats for insects and small animals.

Fern; medium-sized, terrestrial; fan-shaped appearance.
Roots: fibrous; adapted to shallow, well-drained soils.
