Habitat: aquatic; clear ponds, slowly moving streams.
Plant theoryIsoetales is the only member of the Subclass Isoetidae and class Isoetanae. It has only one member Isoetaceae, placed in Phase 1. This is the common situation in the Hydrogen series.
TaxonomyIn the Ppg1 classification Isoetales is placed in the subclass Isoetidae, together with Selaginellales.
BotanyFern; primitive; heterosporous; aquatic or semi-aquatic.
Root: rhizophorous, rhizomorphous; bulb-like, underground corm.
Stem: non-protostelic.
Leaves: ligulate; slender, broadens downward to a swollen base; up to 5 mm wide; attach in clusters.
Reproduction: male and female sporangia at the base; protected by a thin, transparent covering, velum.
Spore: heterosporous.
