Region: south America, Paraguay, Brazil, Bolivia.
Habitat: semideciduous broadleaved forest, transition to savannah; open areas of secondary growth, in well-drained and dry soils; sunny position.
Use: durable wood; reforestation; ornamental tree; pioneer species when establishing woodland; wood for outdoor purposes, posts, poles, railway sleepers, house construction, lathe work, cart shafts.
Botany
Deciduous tree; open, rounded crown; 8 - 14 metres tall; moderate rate of growth.
Stem: straight; 30 - 40cm in diameter; thick bark; heartwood is clearly demarcated from the thin band of sapwood; wood is moderately heavy, hard, with very good mechanical properties, high durability even when exposed.
