Case by Jan Scholten.
Case, therapist.Woman, 60, non-alcoholic inflammatory liver disease.
She has several diagnoses: Sjogren’s disease, lupus erythematodes, non-alcoholic inflammatory liver disease, Lyme disease.
She has many complaints: sleeplessness; severe menses, dysmenorrhoea and endometriosis; parodontitis, stitching pains in her feet and knees; uterus fibroma, herpes zoster on her left side; story of strong car-sickness.
What bothers her very much is her obesity. Her weight should be 60, but it is more than 20 kilos too much. She cannot reduce it whatever she tries with sports and diets.
Her birth was fast and easy. But she was not breathing after birth. She was bottle fed because her mother did not have milk. As a baby she had epilepsy from growing too fast.
She is the oldest of 6 children. She had an abusive childhood. Her father was always humiliating her, saying things like “You are worth nothing. You are not even worth to stand where you have been shitting.” He would take her towel after she had a shower, look at her naked. He was beating her often, giving her the feeling she would die, as if life wasdrawn out of her. When father beat her, she felt like shrinking, contracting, preferring to be dead. When her father told her to do something, she did it as fast as she could out of fear of being beaten. Her father had a concentration camp syndrome. He had lost one arm in the war. She tried to please him and get his approval, but felt rejected. Due to all this she started self defense lessons at 13. At 21, her father tried to beat her again. She screamed, but did not defend herself. She felt astonished for the first that that she could defend herself and could have killed him, as she was kung fu specialist by then. This was the last time her father tried to beat her.
Her mother also had a concentrations camp syndrome. She blamed her for her bad marriage, as she had to marry because she became pregnant of her.
She married at 21, with a man who was 30 years older. At first he was nice and understanding, but later she was forced to have sex almost every day. She felt raped. He wanted parties with partner exchange and free love. Later he wanted to have sex at her job. She felt sick and neglected. She became sleepless, and went into scream therapy. She divorced, but could not go to her parents house as her father threw her out because divorce is not allowed. She got another relationship and they got two daughters. She stopped, he left. It was a whirlwind of depressions. Later she found a nice man and they are still together.
She studied psychology, trying to understand people. She followed many therapies, to get rid of the feeling of being unable to cope with life and her feelings. She studied many kinds of alternative and bodily therapies and gives courses and consultations in those fields. She does different sports, karate and tai kwondo. She likes to help people. She wants to be useful, but mostly doesn’t feel so. She like to co-operate ate with others. But several times she got betrayed. Another couple she worked stole her money, and she felt so stupid. She felt betrayed when another person took away her notes. These things give her the feeling she doesn’t have the right to exist.
She is nice, somewhat docile, giving in, adapting, giggling about the situation.
She can be easily angry, irritated.
She is very tough: once her sternum broke during a karate fight, but she kept on fighting till the end.
She has many fears: irrational fear of monsters, fear that people would stab her with knives, fear of hunger and having food. She fears the darkness and the light has to be on at night..
Fears: buttons.
Dreams of flying, persecution.
She likes animals, gorillas and especially tigers, as they are big, strong, supple, speed and at the same time quiet.
