Austrobuxus swainii
English: Hairybark; Pink cherry.
Synonyms: Longetia swainii.
Region: New South Wales, south eastern Queensland, Australia.
Habitat: less fertile sedimentary based soils; high rainfall areas.
Culture: threatened species.
Botany
Rare rainforest tree; medium to large tree, 40 metres tall.
Stem: trunk diameter of 1 metre; not cylindrical, flanged or irregular, somewhat buttressed at the base; bark is scaly, grey or brown, sheds in irregular patches, leaving slight depressions; small branches are slender, grey or fawn in colour, dotted with many pale lenticels.
Leaves: lanceolate; opposite; around 40 small teeth on the leaf edges; 7 to 14 cm long, 2 to 4 cm wide; stalks up to 10 mm long.
Inflorescence: panicles, around 25 mm long, axillary; from April to June.
Flowers: yellow or green; tiny; 4 petalled. The panicle is
Fruit: dark brown or black capsule; around 13 mm long, with two protruding styles at the fruit's apex; splits into four parts with two glossy brown seeds, 6 mm long.
