Dieffenbachia seguine

Year 2026, Issue 5, Article 4CaseAuthor: Tomáš Výboch
Male, 19 years old
He comes for treatment because of repeated relationship problems. He feels compelled to constantly search for a romantic partner but realizes this reflects unresolved inner issues.
He describes a repetitive pattern. He meets a girl online, becomes completely absorbed in her, and neglects the rest of his life. Once the initial excitement fades, he loses interest and starts looking for someone new. However, he rarely ends the previous relationship because he wants to preserve the emotional bond as a "backup plan."
He traces this pattern back to his first relationship four years earlier. He became emotionally dependent on his girlfriend and could not imagine life without her. Even after the relationship stopped working, he could not end it because he feared the emptiness her absence would create. During that relationship, he gradually abandoned all of his friends.
He says he is interested in women only while there is still something to discover. Once the mystery is gone, so is his interest. Over the past four years, this cycle has repeated with about ten girls, although none of the relationships became physical.
He is attracted to quiet, introverted women because outgoing, socially confident women seem unattainable. He has been shy since childhood, avoids group activities, and prefers being alone or with one close friend.
He is especially sensitive to extroverted people. Seeing others socialize effortlessly makes him feel inadequate and excluded. He longs to connect with people but is too afraid of being rejected or perceived as boring. His greatest wish is for someone to approach him with the same genuine interest that he shows others.
The recurring relationship pattern deeply frustrates him because he genuinely wants a stable partnership. Women often accuse him of leading them on, but he feels he is simply not ready for a committed relationship. When asked what he hopes the remedy will achieve, he says he wants to be satisfied with one person instead of constantly moving from one woman to another.
