Essence: work and motherhood together create restlessness.
Work and motherhood together creates restlessness
The combination of motherhood and work causes problems. They would like to be able to do both, but find it too demanding. They can’t do well at work because of the demands of motherhood and this makes them restless. They get behind and try to catch up by working even harder, never giving themselves a moments rest.
Or they decide to give up work and devote themselves entirely to the task of being a mother. But this somehow doesn’t feel as if it is good enough. They get restless because they feel stupid not having achieved anything in society.
Restlessly working as a mother
As a mother they may feel they can’t keep up with the housework. Either because they have too many children, or because of other factors that are working against them, like a child that is getting behind at school and that needs extra attention. They are very keen for their children to do well at school. They are also afraid that their children will have an accident or that something will go wrong and this makes them restless too. They get behind with their household chores and are forever rushing around in a fruitless effort to catch up
An intelligent mother
They often have a mother who is intelligent herself. She either went to university or had wanted to do so. Because the social circumstances were against her she did not have the opportunity to finish her studies and she has become very disappointed. She finds her housework stupid and boring, always the same old chores. She thinks people find her stupid and does everything she can to prevent the same thing from happening with her children.
Never getting enough real care and attention
Because their mother was always so involved with her work the children never really got the attention they craved for. Or they are sent to a creche because their mother is at work and they don’t get the personal attention they would have had at home.
Copying self pity
Eventually they start to feel sorry for themselves because they did not get the chance to study. Or they did not get the care they needed when they were little. They escape in self pity, but it is a sort of stereotypical behaviour, as if the feelings are copied and don’t originate from themselves.
