Genus: 2 species.
Region: Andes, South America, Venezuela to Bolivia.
Habitat: montane forest; elevation 1600–4000 m.
BotanyEvergreen shrub or tree; 18 meters tall.
Stem: fissured bark.
Leaves: heart-shaped, pear-shaped, sometimes lobed; 10 cm long; dark green above, whitish green beneath; with tufts of hairs in the vein axils; kidney-shaped stipules on branchlets.
Inflorescence: cymose.
Flowers: pinkish-red or crimson; bell-shaped; sepals five; petals five, three-lobed, 9–13 mm long; ovary and styles glabrous; 15–60 stamens.
Fruits: warty; 1 cm wide, often dehiscing on the tree.
