English: Greater mexican-stonecrop.
Region: central America, Guatemala, north to Mexico and California
Habitat: open or wooded mountain sides, in moist or rather dry situations; elevations from 2300 to 3000 metres; moderately cold-hardy plant; succeeds in most soils, prefers a fertile well-drained soil in a sunny position; drought tolerant.
Content: alkaloids, sedine, sedamine.
Ecology: often specially targeted by slugs; immune to the predations of rabbits.
Use: medicine, cultivated in Mexico; ornamental; food, more or less edible, bitter leaves and young blooming stem.
BotanyShrub; succulent; evergreen; 30 to 60 cm tall.
Stem: much branched; branches very thick and succulent, usually woody near their base.
Pollination: by insects.
