Julian (1984) describes a proving of
Molybdenum carried out by Divanji. Tuminello (1995) has also published a proving recently.
SignatureThe name
Molybdenum comes from the Latin word ‘molybdos’, meaning lead. It was discovered in 1778 in an ore thought to contain lead.
The metal is rather greasy and gets used as a lubricant. It is also used in certain alloys, where it increases the overall strength. It has a high melting point which makes it difficult to mould. But it is very resistant to acids hence its usefulness in alloys of iron and nickel to make cutting instruments and spacecraft. Molyb-denum increases the tensile strength and the welding properties of steel.
