Region: east Asia, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam.
Habitat: variety; prefers partial shade, fertile, moist but well-drained soil; elevations below 600 metres.
Content: lupeol, ursolic acid, oleanolic acid, sitosterol, rutin, lecocyanadin, anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, glycosides of kaempferol and quercetin.
Use: ornamental, as a hedge; fruit, raw when fully rip; flowers as a condiment.
BotanyShrub; evergreen; 2 m tall; tolerant of severe pruning; densely branched.
Stem: wood is very hard and heavy.
Leaves: glossy, leathery, oblong, ± 10 cm long, entire, opposite.
Inflorescence: dense rounded clusters 2-5.
Flowers: small, tubular, scarlet; flowering throughout the year.
