SignatureThe name is derived from the Greek word ‘Iodes’ meaning violet. It was discovered in 1811. It is a bluish black solid substance that evaporates into a violet gas when heated. There is a high concentration of
Iodum in seaweed, from which it used to be extracted in the old days.
It is a good disinfectant and gets used in many different solutions. Halogen lamps also contain
Iodum. It has also been used as a pigment in writing ink.
