Habitat: neotropical.
BotanyFern; primitive; terrestrial; large; fleshy; eusporangiate.
Roots: erect rhizomes.
Leaves: 2 to 5 times pinnate.
Sporangia: fused into synangia.
Spores: monolete.
Chromosome count: 2n=80.
TaxonomyMarratia is the type genus of the family Marattiaceae, order Marattiales and class Marattiopsida.
Genetic analysis has shown that Marattia in the broad sense was paraphyletic, and subsequently the genera Ptisana and Eupodium were split off.
