Lygodium japonicum
English: Vine-like fern; Japanese climbing fern.
Region: eastern Asia, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, southeastern Asia, India, eastern Australia; introduced in southeastern United States, Puerto Rico.
Genus: ± 20 species.
Botany
Fern; fine; climber, climbs in treetops; when burnt by fire it grows back quickly.
Stem: wiry, flexible; creeping; climbing.
Leaves: soft; very long leaves, up to 30 metres long; with rachises, vine-like; leaflets, which are smaller segments from the main leaf, sterile and fertile; sterile fronds have lance-shaped segments; fertile fronds have more intricately divided, fringed segments.
Sporangia: on the edges.
Reproduction: via spores; spreads vegetatively via underground rhizomes.
