BotanyType: herbs; perennial; predominantly marsh-dwelling, helophytic (swamp-loving), or aquatic understory plants; typically robust and often armed with physical defenses.
Root: thick, creeping subterranean or underwater rhizomes; spiny; with strong anchoring root systems anchored in deep underwater mud.
Stems: usually modified into heavy, elongated, horizontal rhizomes; leaf stems (petioles) and the peduncles are notoriously armored with sharp, prominent prickles or spines.

Reproduction: sexually via specialized insect, small flies or beetles, attracted to the moist, protective chamber at the spathe base; asexually via slow creeping of the underwater rhizomes.
Fruits: berries; large; hard; green to dark red; leathery; often adapted for water dispersal (hydrochory).
