5.9 Rhodium, Case 1A 56 year old man has high blood pressure, the lowest reading being between 90 and 110. Sometimes his heart misses a beat. There have been times when it suddenly felt as if his heart was sinking, the way you sometimes get in an aeroplane. It can happen when he breathes deeply, movement ameliorates.
It gives him a headache with pain behind both eyes, sometimes slightly worse on the left side. It makes him want to rub his eyes. The pain is < on waking and > on rising.
Sometimes he gets heartburn at night around 4 or 5 am. Drinking a sip of water ameliorates.
He is a professor and the responsibility towards his assistants makes matters worse. Recent financial restrictions are the cause of discontent and when one of his assistants was going to be made redundant he blamed the professor personally.
His position involves frequent travels abroad to attend various conferences. He sometimes gets ill just before he has to travel: coughing, wheezing, mucus he cannot dislodge, sore muscles around his diaphragm during coughing, sore throat and headache. Then he gets more and more worried because the journey has to go ahead and he has to give his lectures. He gets quite worked up before these lectures, more than he cares to admit. The worst thing he can imagine is that someone will ask a question he can’t answer. Everything would be going fine and then suddenly he would let himself down.
His is quite closed, keeps everything inside, but he appears kind and friendly.
He has been nominated to become the next general secretary of the international federation of scientists. It would be a wonderful opportunity to round of his career like this. But although he is the only person on the list of nominations he still worries whether it will fall through at the last minute.
Twenty five years ago he suffered a nervous breakdown during his Ph.D research. The atmosphere created by his promoter was very tense and this made matters worse. Eventually he did his thesis under the guidance of someone else.
His neck tends to get stiff and it creaks a lot. The third cervical vertebra is painful when pressed. His throat feels swollen and he frequently has to scrape it. He has had a lazy left eye since childhood.

AnalysisHis sense of responsibility as a professor towards his assistants reminds us of
Aurum, but this remedy only worked temporarily. On closer investigation we can see that he isn’t so much a manager, but much more a scientist. This takes us to the
Silver series instead of the
Gold series.
He is on the list of nominations to become general secretary of the international federation of scientist. This points to
Stage 9, which takes us to Rhodium. The fact that he worries whether the whole thing will fall through at the last minute further confirms this stage. Another confirmation is the fact that he gets ill just before he has to go on a journey to lecture abroad. And the worst thing he can imagine is that someone will ask a question he can’t answer, that everything will be going all right and then suddenly he will commit a blunder.
ReactionAfter
Aurum there was a temporary improvement, but after it had been repeated it had very little effect. But after Rhodium 1M he immediately felt a lot better, and he started to get to grips with a whole lot of issues. He realised that his own attitude was the most important, everything else would sort itself out accordingly. His headache had gone down a lot and his energy is much better after the first month.
After 6 months his blood pressure is better and the headache has almost gone. He is more relaxed about the financial cuts at work. He is making sure that his own work and that of his assistants can continue and the more general business will have to take care of itself. And when there are not enough secretaries or colleagues to take care of the general running of things that is just bad luck, but it doesn’t worry him.
