Region: Hawaiian Islands, Maui, Molokai, Kauai.
Names: Aka ʻaka ʻawa; Puʻa maka nui.
Taxonomy: similar to Begonia, but differences in flower structure, pollen morphology.
Botany: monoecious herb, succulent branches; tubers; regrow in January, blooms from February to June, die back to tubers afterwrads; seeds very small.
Habitat: humid ravines covered with forest at ± 1200 meters.
Genus: monotypic.
Taxonomy: sister taxon to Begonia.
