Case by Jan Scholten.
Boy, 10, autism, pandas. He is shy and has many anxieties. His development is quite good and his speech is great. But he is very sensitive to noise, cars and fights. He is sensitive to light and he wants to close the windows and put the blinds down.
His pregnancy was not the best. His mother developed diabetes and she had pain in her left abdomen. She had stress because they were closing the company.
The labour ended in a Cesarian section, because his mother had early contractions. The labour was also difficult because his mother was sensitive and delicate and had an aversion to being treated by a male doctor.
As a baby he was very loud. His Apgar score was 10 over 10. He was bottle fed. His toilet training went quite well, although he had a fear of the toilet. At five he was fully continent.
He was born with a hole under the spine. It was diagnosed as a dry fistula. He started walking late, at 17 months. He has a fear of taking risks. He is delicate and very sensitive. He has a selective mutism, being silent in groups of children and speaking very well with family and friends. This comes from a lack of self-confidence. But he is clever and ambitious. He is restless and hyperactive, running around even during meals. He is easily distracted, which is diagnosed as an attention disorder. But he can be very focused when he is busy with letters, books, drawings and puzzles. In his family he can be outgoing, but he doesn't like to be the centre of attention, like in a happy birthday. He has a fear of animals, dogs and toys.
At school he often feels uneasy, especially when the groups are very big. He is doing better in groups with mixed disabilities. He can be obsessive, asking the same questions all the time, or telling what he wants to do on holidays. He likes playing with Lego, building houses with it. He likes swimming and water slides. He likes watching photos of holidays. He is quite artistic, creating buildings, with architecture and drawing. He is not competitive and doesn't like football. He likes to be the best, but he easily gives up.
His mother is very sensitive. She reads books with him. She can also be nervous and depressive due to her stressful life and work. The contact with his father is good, but the father also has an aversion to his echolalia. He is an only child.
