Essence: confusion leads to abuse.
Confusion leads to abuse
They want to belong to the group, and they know that they have a place within the group, only they aren’t sure which one. They don’t know what they can and can’t do. They are afraid of taking up so much space that others want to get rid of them again. So they start to adapt, taking on the ideas and the customs of other people until they are no longer sure of what they want for themselves. They get confused about their own part within the whole and others soon notice this. This makes them an easy prey for manipulation. They get enticed to do things which they regret later on.
Identity crisis through selfishness
They get into a sort of identity crisis because of their doubts. They feel that they are being too selfish whenever they follow their own desires. They feel they should continually adapt themselves to the wishes of the group, or the family, or the religious sect etc. But they lose themselves in the process and they need to start to find themselves again.
Abused in triangular relationships
The confusion is particularly strong in relationships with more than one person. Here they completely lose sight of their own wishes and always feel they are being too selfish. They become a victim of the interplay of other peoples desires and get totally lost.
Indignant about being misled
Later on they regret that they followed other people’s wishes so blindly. When they find out what really happened they feel misled and can’t understand that other people should want to be so manipulative. They would never dream of doing this themselves: they are far more inclined to adapt, so they can’t understand how others could be so selfish. They feel indignant, hurt and abused.
Bewildered by corruption
They are always so full of good intentions that they are totally unprepared for corruption. They already think that they are doing wrong when they merely try and put across their own ideas, with the best intentions, let alone that they would dream of purposely cheating the whole group. They always go to great lengths to explain every action they undertake that might deviate slightly from the general code of behaviour. So are completely bewildered when other people try and manipulate the group to their own advantage.
Confusion of role with regard to the victim
They may also get confused about who is the victim. An extreme example is in wartime, where the soldiers identify with their victims to such an extent that they start to feel guilty and wonder who is really the guilty person.
Another variation is that of a hostage who starts to identify with the cause that his captor is fighting for. He loses sight of his own position and own own interests and starts to side with his aggressor and his motives. The other aspect of such a situation is that it may be in his own best interest to become good mates with his captor.
Misled by cadgers
They are quite gullible. Their doubt about their own ideas and motives makes them an easy prey for people who want to get something out of them. Some of them may have good, some of them may have bad intentions.
