Symplocarpus foetidus

Boy, 12 years oldHis mother brings him because of depression, profound social insecurity, and difficulty fitting in with his peers.
He has no hobbies apart from playing video games. He enjoys going to school because it gives him something to do and allows him to spend time with classmates, but weekends are lonely. Although he longs to spend time with friends, he is too shy to contact them. Even inviting someone to the cinema feels almost impossible, as he struggles to find the "right" moment and has to force himself to make any social initiative.
He has no idea what he wants to become in the future. Although he dreamed of becoming an astronaut as a child, he now says he would rather be homeless. He feels that his parents are overprotective and has stopped asking for permission because he expects them to refuse.
He is terrified of being alone in the dark, believing a monster might be there and eat him. When asked about his greatest wish, he says that he wants at least one loyal friend.
His mother describes him as an exceptionally loyal but emotionally immature boy. He had only one close friend in preschool and continues talking about him three years after they lost contact. He often asks, "Why does someone tell me they like me one day and then later say they don't like me anymore?" His thinking is highly structured, he loves LEGO, and because he seems unable to recognize danger, his parents have become excessively protective.
Acceptance by peers is extremely important to him. He desperately wants to belong and is willing to do almost anything to be accepted.
Physically, he suffers from chronic abdominal bloating, excessive sulphurous flatulence, recurrent abdominal pain, scalp itching, facial tics, and has a history of intestinal parasites.
Although he loves his sisters, he constantly teases them and is very jealous of them. At times his despair becomes so overwhelming that he says he wants to jump off a cliff.
Several months later, his mother starts home schooling him because he feels much safer at home. His hygiene is extremely poor. He often forgets to flush the toilet, leaves dirty clothes scattered around his room, and neglects basic habits such as washing his hands or brushing his teeth.
Studying becomes a daily struggle. His mother explains that the moment she leaves the room, he immediately switches to YouTube. She hopes that a remedy will help him develop the motivation to learn because she fears he will never become independent. He remains socially awkward, resentful, jealous, and preoccupied with perceived injustice.
