Maintaining independence to get respect as a person
They have the idea that they have to maintain independence in order to deserve respect. They maintain self-control to keep their self-confidence. They can be like a real gentleman, preserving respect for himself and others. They maintain norms and values as a free person.
They have to remain independent of their father
They want to preserve their independence from their father. It can be difficult for them to maintain their independence because their father is a strong person. But it's possible when they are on guard all the time. They fear that if they let go of their watchful side, their father can do something that will take away their freedom.
Father keeps saying that they have to be autonomous
They can also have problems with their father in the sense that their father wants them to maintain self-control all the time. Their father can do that because he knows that maintaining independence is needed to maintain self-respect.
Father is maintaining autonomy
Their father can be a person who is maintaining self-control. He can be a real gentleman that never lets his emotions go or his instincts take over. His self-control gives him autonomy. Their father can also have spiritual interest, like being a member of the Freemasons. Or he can be a therapist with the same gentlemanly attitude.
