Cautious handling autonomy so as not to be selfish
They are very cautious about handling their autonomy. They fear that when they go their own way it will be seen as selfish. They seek many ways to be independent without taking too much from others. They can avoid their autonomy in order not to be seen as a bad person and not to be despised. Thus there arises an alternation between self-control and egotism. The independence gives them self-worth, which alternates with periods where they feel depressed because they have been too selfish. In the extreme form they can even become a beggar. But there too they alternate between begging and trying to be independent. They feel too good a person just to go out begging, but this alternates with begging in a restrained way to avoid any infringement of the autonomy of others.
Avoiding independence due to being a neglected child
They can have had a childhood where they were neglected. They have lost their self-worth. They felt despised, especially when they tried to stand up for themselves and be autonomous. So they fear to go their own way, thinking that it will be seen as bad. They avoid their independence in order to avoid being despised. They can also have had a past where they were abused, for instance sexually. That has given them a lack of self-worth, which has led to the lack of strength to assert their independence.
Abused when proposing their autonomy
Lack of financial means can also be a big issue and is a source of remaining dependent. They fear poverty because that will make them weaker in finding ways how to be independent. Money can give them autonomy. But their lack of ability to be autonomous will make it difficult to make money. And that makes autonomy unrealistic for them.
Avoiding inner world for fear of being despised
They also can go for control of their mind. They want to become independent of the instincts and drives of their psyche. But the drives are so numerous and enormous that it feels an insurmountable task. They fear that self-control will be unrealistic. Their selfish side in particular is seen as too strong. They can be so idealistic about wanting to be completely unselfish that it cannot be attained. They try to avoid all personal desires. But that also leads to not being free and so they are victim again of their own striving not to be a victim.
