Taxonomy
The tropicbirds were traditionally grouped in Pelecaniformes; in the Sibley-Ahlquist taxonomy, the Pelecaniformes were united with other groups into a large Ciconiiformes. More recently this grouping has been found to be massively paraphyletic and split again.
