Region: east Asia, India, Sri Lanka, Philippines.
Habitat: primary and secondary forests, in open localities; sunny position; humus-rich, well-drained soil; from sea-level to 1500 metres.
Content: flavonoids; alpha-pinene (25.45%); alpha-eudesmol (7.06%); tricyclene (5.74%).
Use: ornamental; cosmetic; flowers are eaten.
Botany
Evergreen shrub or small tree, ± 4 m high.
Leaves with bacterial nodes, in symbiosis, pass into any seeds, for nitrogen-fixation?, growth-regulation?, leaves poisonous to livestock.
Flowers: fragrant.
Fruit: a globose drupe, black 5 mm in diameter; sweet taste when ripe.
