Source – extract of pancreatic and salivary glands of sheep or ox
Genius
An important intercurrent remedy for acid reflux, indigestion, gout, and diabetes.
Clinical Symptoms
Pancreatinum assists in the digestion of starches and fats and is recommended in cases of dyspepsia or indigestion where the patient is unable to tolerate these substances (Hale’s Materia Medica). It is indicated in intestinal indigestion with pain occurring an hour or more after eating, as well as in lienteric diarrhea. It is especially useful in diabetes of pancreatic origin.
Deeper Understanding
Pancreatinum shares certain qualities with Lac ovis (prepared from sheep). The individual tends to follow the herd and those in authority. There is a strong desire to meet family expectations, accompanied by a fear of family separation or disintegration. Such individuals are often shy, insecure, and socially inadept. They may sacrifice themselves for others, abandoning their own growth and keeping a low profile. They act as peacemakers (similar to Magnesium muriaticum) and may be submissive in romantic relationships (as seen in Lac caninum). Additional features include overeating, vertigo, and disorientation (comparable to Nux moschata).
Clinical Use
In severe cases of indigestion and dyspepsia, Pancreatinum is one of the key remedies to be considered. It is particularly suited to atonic dyspepsia resulting from impaired secretion or defective composition of digestive enzymes.
It is indicated when the digestion of fats and starches is deficient, in acid dyspepsia arising from abnormal digestion, and in intestinal indigestion with pain occurring an hour or more after meals. It is also useful in the indigestion of children fed predominantly on milk, sweets, and starchy foods, and in cases of lienteric diarrhea.
In diabetes mellitus, Pancreatinum is an important intercurrent remedy, especially where there are marked fluctuations. It should be carefully differentiated from Insulinum.
Burnett also noted that Pancreatinum is often of great service in cases of gout.
