Proving their autonomy against corruption
They feel that they have to prove their autonomy in order to get self respect. They feel challenged by corruption, by people who cheat with money or values. They have to prove that they can withstand the temptation. They want to prove that they are master of themselves instead of being tempted by the money or power.
Proving their autonomy with handicaps
They have the feeling that they have to prove that they are master of themselves. They do dangerous and challenging things to prove that they can control themselves and they do it even despite handicaps. They feel handicapped, physically or mentally. They can also ask for support in their handicaps but they have to do it in such a way that they don’t feel like they're becoming dependent. They can accept support only if they are still free.
Forced to be independent as a neglected child
Their tough character can have developed from a neglected childhood. Their father has often neglected them, so that they developed a lack of self-worth. They had to overcome their feeling of being worthless by showing that they are hard and strong and can stand all kinds of dangers. By proving their autonomy in dangerous situations they can regain their self-worth. By being tough they show their father that he was not right.
Hiding so as not to be abused
They hide behind a wall so that no one can abuse them. By hiding their inner world and not showing their weak spots, no one can take advantage of them. That can make them very tough. It looks as if they are wearing armor.
Proving self-control over selfishness
They want to have full control over themselves and especially over their selfish side. By controlling their egoism, they prove that they can control themselves. They can be very hard and tough in their control, denying their needs as not truly necessary. It can go into a spiritual search, a search for the core of their being.
