Confused about autonomy due to abuse
They are confused about themselves and their personal independence. They are very insecure about themselves. They don't know who they are and what they are worth. They feel despised and neglected very easily, which leaves them in a state of nervous anxiety. They don't have the power to stand up for themselves and so they get abused very easily. Abuse in the past, such as sexual abuse, can have brought about this state of confusion about their own autonomy. They ask themselves how it's possible that someone can just invade their territory.
Confused about independence as a neglected child
Their lack of independence is often due to being neglected as child. Their father often had no time for them and when he did have a moment he wasn't interested in his children. This gave them a lack of self-worth. They feel as if they were not worth being helped and cared for. On the other hand they have the feeling that they have a right for their needs to be attended to, so they can develop a demanding attitude.
Confused about independence from lack of money
Lack of money is a real problem. They fear poverty because for them that means that they will never get independence. They already feel too weak to stand up for themselves. This attitude can also be the cause of their poverty as they are too fearful and confused to act with force. Besides that they can also have a fear of being egotistical and selfish. Their father may have told them so often that they are selfish that they don't dare to grab anything for themselves anymore.
Mocked as an outcast
They can get into a situation of being a real outcast and beggar. When they've lost all their possessions they can only survive by asking others for help. But then they are also often picked upon, mocked and ill-treated. They feel teased, but because they don't have the power to do anything about it, they start smiling and join in the teasing with a distorted smile.
