2. you have to train the hardest, son, what do the others say when the chief's son is a coward? You have to show the most courage.
But how can I prove it when I am so afraid?
You have to overcome yourself, you have to conquer your inner bastard.
Dad, I want to, but I can't. And what is that, the inner bastard? How do I recognise it? Is that the fear I feel?
Yes, son, that's the fear you have to overcome. You have to climb the highest tree if you are afraid of heights, and you will sleep in the snow if you freeze too easily. You have to do that and much more to conquer your inner bastard.

3. Some years later, the boy has become a very strong young man. He wants to become a chief, but his father is still stronger, he sees that he can never surpass his father, he can never become braver, stronger, more respected than his father.
So he leaves the tribe and finds another one in which he is by far the strongest. He wins every duel, and as chief he leads this tribe from victory to victory.
4. "I have defeated the inner pig, and now I am defeating all the other pig-dogs. All those who stand in my way are swine dogs and will be defeated."
He has conquered his fears. There is only one fear that he has not been able to overcome, one that has remained with him since childhood: the fear of heights.
There has always been a custom in this tribe. Once a year, the bravest, and that must be the chief, has to climb an eagle's nest and eat an egg. In this way, he must assimilate the eagle's superiority and thus guarantee this superiority for his tribe. Year after year, the chief manages to get around this task. At first, no one doubts his courage, which he demonstrates throughout the year, but gradually suspicions arise that he might have a problem climbing the eagle's nest. This makes him less and less acceptable to the tribe. For the tribe wants to be led by someone who is unreservedly courageous. Only then is this tribe invulnerable and invincible.
As suspicions grow stronger year after year, the members of his bodyguard conspire to cut off his head.
5. When his father learns of this, he is deathly sad. But he is not allowed to show his sadness, for that is forbidden by the all-embracing bravery of a chief.
He is not the person to show grief. He does not even feel it, sadness, in the sense of being sad. What he feels is anger, unbridled anger.
Instead of grieving for his son, he starts the next war. A great, great war. A war in which all, but really all, the bastards are to be defeated, all, down to the last one, exterminated to the pelt and the sting.
6. What could make history turn out differently?
A poem by Erich Kästner suggests itself:
And when the next war began, the women said, "No!" and locked brother, son and husband in their homes.
But that is not a solution either, not even a conceivable one.
Rather, that victory should not be given the highest pleasure.
War is no longer needed until winning loses its value.

One fear has remained: Fear of heights; but he has to climb into an eagle's nest; he avoids this ritual; then everyone realizes that he is not invulnerable and without fear; but he must be the bravest and so the tribe kills him; father is very sad, but as chief he is not allowed to mourn and gets angry and starts a big war to exterminate all pig dogs.

There will be war as long as winning is so much fun.
