Defending autonomy and self-respect
They feel attacked in their freedom and self-respect. They see autonomy as essential for their self-respect, so they have to defend their freedom against all attacks. They can also exaggerate the value of independence, so much so that they see enemies of independence everywhere.
Defending the autonomy of their father
They can also have the idea that they have to defend the autonomy of their father. They would lose self-respect if their father were to lose his independence. But they have to struggle for his independence.
Father is fighting for his autonomy
It can also be that their father is fighting for his own autonomy. Their father can, for instance, see his children as an attack on his freedom. He wants to keep self-respect, so he gets into a fight with himself, trying to defend his independence and at the same time be a father for his children. He sees it as important that his children are autonomous, so he defends them in their pursuit of this. Their father can be a lonely fighter.
Father is attacking their autonomy
They can also feel attacked in their autonomy by their father. They feel his dark side in his attacks of anger and rage. But they won't give in and will fight their father to preserve their own freedom.
Struggling to keep spiritual self-respect
They can also develop an interest in the inner world. They see their vitality as good but also as a hindrance for their self-control. They search for the essence of life, the real nature of the creation and God, but they feel it as a struggle. They feel that they have to fight their shadow, a shadow that they inherited from their father.
